FIS Congress in Barcelona decided upon competition schedules and rule modifications.
The FIS Congress gathered this week in Barcelona and confirmed the calendars for the upcoming season and slightly changed the competition rules. In the future the qualification will reduce the number of competitors in a World Cup to 40. The prize money of 19890 CHF will now be divided between the best 20 athletes.
Reducing the competitors to 40 seems to be a two-sided medal. On the one hand, a lot of competitions in the last season were held without qualification, as typically only 47 or 48 jumpers were on the start lists anyway. Ensuring that there will always be a qualification makes it for sure easier for the organizers to calculate. But on the other hand, at the beginning of the last winter – before the “injury crisis” – there were some competitions, where almost 80 jumpers attended the qualification. So if everybody is healthy again, it might happen that a lot of jumpers simply have to watch a competition.
The number of scheduled competitions looks like a setback for this sports: There are less World Cups as last year and what’s more, also the number of Grand Prix and Continental Cup competitions was notably decreased. While there is a tough fight between local organizers to stay in the men’s World Cup, a handful of possible competition weekends stayed vacant for the Ladies. The schedule for the upcoming season looks as follows (FIS-Cup and Alpen-Cup missing):
