21-year-old Gianina Ernst announced, that ski jumping season 2020/2021 was the last one of her career as a ski jumper. She was born in Switzerland and represented this country until the year 2013, when she changed her nationality to German.
She quickly made a huge progress and already in December 2013, in Lillehammer she was 2nd, only behind Sara Takanashi. Her good shape resulted in an olympic nomination and she was the youngest athlete, participating at the Sochi Olympics 2014. In the first ladies ski jumping competition in the olympics history, Ernst ranked 28th.
The following years were less successful for the young athlete. Her performance was not good enough to fight for the top places in the World Cup. In December 2018, in Notodden she tore her cruciate ligament.
Ernst returned to the hill last year, at the German Nationals in Klingenthal, where she ranked 8th.
“It’s time to say good bye to my professional sports career and my big passion, that had been a big part of my life since I was a child. Because of my multiple injuries I’m not able to return to ski jumping anymore. Thinking about my 12-year adventure with ski jumping is always bringing a smile on my face” – wrote Ernst on her social media.
“Now I’m excited about the new challenges in my life and the first one is studying psychology at the university in Zurich. Who knows, maybe some day in some way I will return to sports and share my experiences with other athletes” – added the 21-year old.
